*This course is NOT a licensing course. This is a pre apprentice course to aid in finding employment in the plumbing field.
This course is a pre-apprentice course designed, and highly encouraged, for people who desire a career in the plumbing industry. Completing this course will provide students with the skills and knowledge to advance in the application and interview process, creating greater chances to be hired with little to no experience.
This course will instruct students on general plumbing practices, terminology, and repairs. They will learn about everyday tools and their uses with an emphasis on safety. Students will utilize our “Hands-On” lab for instruction on the lay-out and installation of basic venting, drainage systems, as well as domestic water piping. Students will be introduced to basic soldering techniques, and the different types of piping materials such as copper, pvc, and cast iron.
Although the completion of this course will not provide apprentice approved hours, students will graduate with an understanding of what it is to be a Plumber and if this is the career path they want to peruse. We also suggest to take the OSHA 10 safety course in conjunction with this course to boost resumes and kick start the apprentice employment opportunities. OSHA 10 is a requirement for plumbing apprentice to have to upgrade to their Journeyman Plumbing license. It is also required for individuals that work on jobs that are heavily restricted by OSHA regulations, like construction zones. Call the school for more information on OSHA and the availability of classes.
Books and materials are included in the tuition cost of the class. Some tools will be needed to complete projects. Instructors will go over the tools and the tool list the first week of class. As students complete this course, they will collect a tool kit that will provide them great use when they are hired for a plumbing apprentice job. This will also show employers that the induvial is prepared and ready to commit to the job at hand.

Plumbing Licensing Questions
An apprenticeship is a registered four-year program that will provide you with classroom and practical training. The process of becoming an apprentice takes time, but you get paid while you learn and gain experience! If you want to be an apprentice, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
New Apprentice need to register with the Office of Apprenticeship and apply, with a sponsor, for the NH Plumbing Apprentice card through the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.
You should be sponsored by a company, or induvial, that is registered with Office of Apprenticeship and has a Journeymen or Master Plumbing license. A licensed technician will need to sign off as a sponsor on the state application and supervise you in the field. Your hours start when you receive the active Apprentice card number from the state office.
To qualify for a journeyman license, you must obtain minimum of 600 hours of schooling and 8,000 hours of field experience. The 600 hours of classroom training is divided into 150 hours each calendar year. To gain experience and start your apprenticeship, you will need to be hired by a licensed technician. 10-hour OSHA training is also required for licensing.
Apprentices are responsible for maintaining their own records. When courses are completed, you will need to send a copy of the letter of completion to the Office of Apprenticeship. Remember to keep copies of your original documents just in case!
The state apprentice card will need to be renewed each year by providing to the State office proof of enrollment and up-to-date field time.
When you have completed all the mandated classroom hours, you will need to request a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Apprenticeship and then you will become eligible to take the state exam. You must pass the state exam to be able to apply for the Journeyman license.
Steps to become a Plumbing Apprentice:
The technician will have to call and talk with the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification, and they will determine if the license is reciprocal in the state of NH. If it is, the technician will most likely have to take the NH State exam.

The NH Plumbing license expires every two years; plumbers will need a total of six hours of continuing education to renew their license.

The State of NH is changing their license database. All professional licensees will need to make a log in for this new portal. It is not fully functional yet, but here is a link to set up your account. Like the State of NH, MA's License is on a two year cycle. Unlike NH, they renewal date is set for all technicians to renew on the same date.
Each year the state of MA issues a new code session, these sessions are numbered for easy recognition. Every other year ALL Plumbers (and Gasfitters) are required to renew their licensing by May 1st. For gasfitters, each session is 6 hours long; totaling out to 12 hours per renewal.
The next renewal date is May 1st 2026. The sessions required for this renewal is Session 17 and Session 18.
Our MA Renewal classes are set up to run every other month for the first session of the renewal cycle and then every month from January to April for the second session of the renewal. Click here for dates!
The short answer is no, you do not need to do either session to renew for the first time.
According to the MA Board of State Examiners of Plumbing and Gas Fitting CMR 248, under section 11.04: Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) Requirements for Master and Journeymen Plumbers, Master and Journeyman Gasfitters and for Undiluted Liquefied Petroleum Gas Installers, there are several exemptions of the MCE.
Number 4 states "The licensee was issued their license for the first time during the current renewal cycle. However, this exemption shall not relieve a journeyman plumber or gas fitter from the continuing education requirement during a renewal cycle in which they obtain a master's license;"
Basically stating that a new licensee can skip these requirements only during the first renewal process, but will not be exempt if it is a Masters license because the licensee had a Journeyman's license prior to upgrading.
If you choose to skip these requirments you still need to process the paperwork to renew your license. The State of MA should mail out a renewal letter prior to the May renewal date.
If you do not recieve a renewal letter prior to the May renewal date, you will need to contact the state and make sure they have the correct mailing address.
