Gas Licensing Questions

What is a Gas Trainee?
In the State of NH, a Trainee is similar to an apprentice but for gas training. A “Fuel Gas Trainee” means “any person engaged in the process of meeting the registration requirements, who shall work under the supervision of a licensed fuel gas fitter in the repair or installation of inside and outside piping from a gas meter or first stage regulator, and the repair or installation of residential and nonresidential heating equipment systems, hot water heating systems, or hearth equipment systems utilizing liquefied propane gas or natural gas.” (Defined by section Saf-Mec 301.09)
How to become a Trainee?

To obtain a trainee card from the state, an induvial must first be sponsored by a NH licensed gas fitter. An application will need to be filled out and submitted to the state for an identification card. Then the individual will need to start tracking field time and start classroom training.

NH Gas License Levels:

Gas Piping Installer
Gas Equipment Installer
Gas Service Technician

All trainees have to start with the Piping Installer license requirements. This includes 60 hours of classroom education and 1000 of field time. There is also a corresponding state exam that will need to be passed prior to obtaining a Piping Installer license.

Next would be the Equipment Installer license requirements. This includes an additional 40 hours, 100 hours total, of classroom education and a minimum of 1000 hours of field time. There is also a corresponding state exam that will need to be passed prior to obtaining an Equipment Installer license.

The final level is the Service Technician license requirements. This includes and additional 40 hours, 140 total, of classroom education and a minimum of 2000 field hours. There is also a corresponding state exam that will need to be passed prior to obtaining a Service Technician license.

How do I renew my New Hampshire license?

The NH gas license expires in two years and on the last day of the birthday month of the license holder. The technician will need to have a total of six hours of continuing education, 2 three-hour code classes. The technician will need to log on to the State website to renew their license thought he online portal.

Our gas renewal courses are set up so the technician can receive all six hours in one day or choose to do only one of the three-hour courses.
